Another year is coming to an end, which can only mean one thing: It’s the holiday season! During this amazing time of year, many people have time to relax and prepare for the new year. Even artists and crafters will take some time off to be with their families and enjoy the holiday break. Since a lot of your life revolves around your arts and crafts, we thought it would be fun to compile a short list (after all, the holiday season isn’t THAT long) of movies about arts and crafts (or artists and crafters) that you can watch during your holiday break.
Note: Some of these movies are ones that you won’t necessarily want to watch with your grandma. We have provided the MPAA rating and some useful information about the film, but you should keep in mind that this is simply a list of some arts and crafts related movies and not necessarily ones that we would recommend.
- The Art of Love – Rated “Approved.” This film stars Dick Van Dyke as a struggling artist who fakes his own death so his works will increase in value. We don’t recommend this tactic.
- The Agony and the Ecstasy – Rated “Approved.” Nudity in paintings and sculptures. A biographical story of Michelangelo’s (Charlton Heston) troubles while painting the Sistine Chapel. Who knows, maybe one day people will make a movie about you!
The Monuments Men – Rated PG-13 for some images of war violence and historical smoking. A platoon is tasked to recover art masterpieces during WWII. While not necessarily about artists, the film tells the story of the Allies’ attempts to recover priceless art stolen by the Nazis.
Bonus: “The Rape of Europa” is a documentary that provides more information about the actual events chronicled in “The Monuments Men.”
- Lust for Life – Rated “Approved.” A biographical film starring Kirk Douglas as the brilliant but tortured artist Vincent van Gogh. An interesting biography of one of the greatest artists of all time.
- The Thomas Crown Affair – Rated R for full nudity, some sexuality, and language. A rich playboy amuses himself by stealing artwork. It probably goes without saying, but you shouldn’t steal art even if you are a rich playboy.
- Helvetica – Not rated. Some language. Documentary about typography, graphic design, and global visual culture. An interesting look at the way the helvetica type font can be found in many different places.
